RGT Model of Sport Mastery

Foundation

General fitness refers to the basic physical abilities required for movement and sport. These include balance, stability, flexibility, mobility, body awareness, core strength, and symmetry. These qualities lay the foundation for which more specific movements can be built upon. General fitness is important for injury prevention and overall work capacity.

Mentality refers to the psychological characteristics required to be a successful high-performance athlete. Sport demands an array of mental skills such as calmness under pressure, emotional control, mental focus, resilience to adversity and failure, self-confidence, positivity, and optimism. Mentality is not only important for how athletes approach a game, but also for how they approach the long-term mastery of their craft.

General health refers to the physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing of an athlete outside of sport. Health is a multifaceted and intricate system that stretches far beyond just physical skills on the playing court. An athlete’s ability to reach high performance relies on living a healthy lifestyle that supports their athletic endeavors. This lifestyle includes sleep, nutrition, rest and recovery, emotional wellbeing, spiritual fulfillment and meaning, and social wellbeing and connection. General health is a key component to the longevity and sustainability of an athlete’s playing career.

Performance

Fundamental athleticism refers to the physical abilities necessary for high performance sport. These include speed, power, strength, anaerobic capacity, aerobic capacity, and agility. These abilities are the building blocks for achieving sport success. All high-performance athletes have fined tuned their fundamental athleticism to maximize their success. Fundamental athleticism is heavily influenced by technical proficiency.

Technical Proficiency refers to the quality and efficiency of movement execution. All forms of movement require a transfer of energy through the musculoskeletal system or external environment (i.e ground, tennis racket, basketball, etc.). Technical proficiency bridges the gap between fundamental athleticism and sport performance. It is associated with the rhythm, timing, and coordination of movements that allow athletes to maximize performance in their respective sports. Developing technical proficiency is essential to success in high performance sport.

Mastery

Sport specific skills refer to the intricate combination of gross movements that require large muscle coordination (i.e., running, jumping) with fine movements that require precise control of small muscles (i.e., flick of wrist in basketball). These skills must be hardwired within the subconscious layers of the motor cortex. Mastery is achieved when a skill becomes so instinctive that no conscious effort is required to execute it, known as unconscious competence. Achieving sport mastery is vital for reaching one’s full potential.
